What is it?
A place for independent designers and makers to sell things and showcase their work. People can set up their own shop and sell things, show how they make things and enter any of the competitions that Folksy runs.
What is the need?
There are an increasing number of artists and designers going direct to market. Folksy provides a place to aggregate individual talent, so that the whole has more value than the sum of the parts. This value comes in the form of a more centralised marketing effort, an architecture that supports feature and functions not available to “off the shelf” ecommerce software, and of course shared ideas and energy you get in a passionate community …
Who is it for?
Independent makers and designers, including semi-pro hobbyists and graduates as well as established professionals. Buyers include an increasing number of people looking for unique, handmade and often recycled or upcycled products.
What is the benefit?
There’s a benefit in promoting a sustainable ‘cottage industry’ in crafts that provides an outlet for design talent who might otherwise not be able to support their work. Folksy supports the little people in being able to compete against the larger stores and e-commerce outlets. The outcome of the amazing energy of artsists and designers using Folksy is a marketplace that contains some amazing work that, if you could find it, would be far more expensive on the high street.
